For the women of South Dakota: an abortion manual
I understand that you're probably really angry right now. Maybe you're reading a blog expressing that anger -- the anger that your state thinks it knows better than you what to do with your body. Maybe you're anxiously wondering where the nearest abortion clinic is, now that you will have to leave the state to get to one. If you have a serious medical condition, you might be doubling up on birth control methods, leading to a lot of worry and possibly negative side effects.
But what you need right now isn't the righteous anger the rest of the blogosphere will give you. You need more.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, when abortions were illegal in many places and expensive to get, an organization called Jane stepped up to the plate in the Chicago area. Jane initially hired an abortion doctor, but later they did the abortions themselves. They lost only one patient in 13,000 -- a lower death rate than that of giving live birth. The biggest obstacle they had, though, was the fact that until years into the operation, they thought of abortion as something only a doctor could do, something only the most trained specialist could perform without endangering the life of the woman.
They were deceived -- much like you have probably been deceived. An abortion, especially for an early pregnancy, is a relatively easy procedure to perform. And while I know, women of South Dakota, that you never asked for this, now is the time to learn how it is done. There is no reason you should be beholden to doctors -- especially in a state where doctors have been refusing to perform them, forcing the state's only abortion clinic to fly doctors in from elsewhere.
No textbooks or guides existed at that time to help them, and the equipment was hard to find. This is no longer true. For under $2000, any person with the inclination to learn could create a fully functioning abortion setup allowing for both vacuum aspiration and dilation/curettage abortions. If you are careful and diligent, and have a good grasp of a woman's anatomy you will not put anyone's health or life in danger, even if you have not seen one of these procedures performed.
Today, I will discuss dilation and curettage -- what used to be the most common abortion procedure before vacuum aspiration took its place. Vacuum aspiration is an easier method, but sometimes remaining fetal/placental material necessitates doing a "cleanup" D&C anyway, so you should know how to do this procedure first.
DISCLAIMER: I am posting this as information only. Whether anyone chooses to act upon this information is their own concern. I believe in the free exchange of information and ideas. I believe this information has been kept from women for too long, and there is no reason they should not know about a procedure being performed on their own body, and no reason women should be kept in the dark about how to perform it -- especially if someone they know is having their health jeopardized by this law.

First, let's talk instruments, before we talk implementation:
Cervical dilators come in many forms. Some hydroscopic dilators work by absorbing moisture from the vagina into the dilator, gradually increasing its diameter until it is workable. However, the "old-fashioned" way is with a set of dilators -- metal instruments of varying sizes. It would probably be best for an illegal practitioner to use these, as they are essentially infinitely reusable as long as they are sterilized between uses. Essentially, the practitioner begins with the smallest instrument and inserts it into the cervix. Then, he or she moves on to the next smallest, and so forth, until the cervix is sufficiently dilated to allow the uterine forceps to be used. This is the easiest part of the abortion, and one that requires very little knowledge other than the placement of the cervix.
Uterine forceps look like a hybrid of a scissor handle and a bird of prey's talon. Their use, once the cervix is dilated enough to allow access to the uterus, is simple: they remove the fetal material from the uterus -- as much as can be removed in this manner.
Curettes are perhaps the most foreign-looking of the implements used. Essentially, they look like small spoons with sharp edges. These are used after the uterine forceps, to make sure the rest of the fetal material and placenta is scraped from the sides of the uterus.
A course of antibiotics is CRUCIAL. The most common cause of death post-illegal abortion is due to infection. When your uterus has been opened up, it is more prone to infection. Do not fool around with this: antibiotics are absolutely necessary post-abortion. Antibiotics can be purchased from Mexican pharmaceutical supply houses for less than $2 per course.
Now that we've discussed the more uncommon instruments, let's move on to discussing the procedure itself.
Procedure
Sterilizing instruments is absolutely critical. The most professional way to sterilize instruments would be with an autoclave -- but this is something to get only if you have an extra few hundred dollars to spend in the name of efficiency. Sterilization is no joke, and nothing to be skimped on, but you can sterilize instruments very well with a household pressure cooker. Ordinary boiling water does not kill all pathogens; while boiling water was the best people could do 100 years ago, it is not the best we can do now. Check your pressure cooker's manual carefully and figure out how much water needs to be placed in it to stay at 250-260 degrees for 30 minutes. Be sure to refer carefully to the manual, or injury and damage to the cooker could result. Place the water and instruments into the pressure cooker and allow it to "cook" them for 30 minutes at the 250-260 temperature. This will steam-sterilize your instruments. If you have an autoclave, lucky you! Follow its operating instructions.
Assuming you have no autoclave, follow the instructions for opening your pressure cooker, then remove the instruments with an already-sterilized pair of ordinary forceps. set them in the sterile bags. Now your instruments are prepared. From now on, be sure to only touch the instruments on the handle side, rather than on the side coming into contact with the cervix and uterus. Wipe down your table with bleach solution, allow it to dry, and then place clean plastic sheeting over it.
Your patient should be naked from the waist down and should have her pubic area shaved. Request that the patient does so the night before. Administer a sedative to the patient long enough before the procedure begins that it will be fully effective during the D&C procedure. Prior to the procedure, conduct an ordinary pregnancy test on the woman. This may seem like a silly step, but pregnancy tests are never 100% accurate, and women have been known to come to abortion clinics and test negative. Ask your patient how long it has been since her last period. If it has been eight weeks or less, the procedure itself will take less than 15 minutes after dilation begins. The length grows, however, until at about 13-14 weeks (the limit for a D&C procedure because of the limited dilation ability of dilators) it will last up to 45 minutes. Honesty is IMPERATIVE, because dishonesty could endanger the woman's health.
Once the patient has "assumed the position" in the stirrups, wipe the vulva and anal areas with separate wet wipes, including the labia majora and minora. Once the patient is clean, lubricate the vagina with water-based lubricant and use the vaginal speculum to open the vagina and examine the cervix (information on how to use a speculum properly is widely available online and in print and does not need to be reprinted here, but please be sure you understand how to use the speculum prior to conducting this procedure).
The cervix is a small, round, smooth-looking muscle at the top of the vaginal canal. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the female reproductive system prior to performing any procedure such as this. The cervix is the entrance to the uterus. A non-pregnant uterus is only as big as a small pear, but it grows bigger even in the earliest months of pregnancy -- at 8 weeks, it is the size of a peach, and at 14 weeks, the size of a grapefruit. I didn't make up all these fruit-sizing terms, other people did, and I apologize for making anyone uncomfortable whilst eating fruit salad from now on.
It is important to know the approximate size of the uterus because that's where you're headed. Get out your smallest dilator and insert it slowly and gently into the cervix. This hurts -- it's part of why your patient is sedated. Novocaine is sometimes injected to numb the cervix, but when you are just starting, it is probably preferable to stay away from needles entirely. Insert each dilator in turn. Even the largest dilator, as you will notice, doesn't give you very much room -- less than an inch of opening. There's no way you can see into the uterus. From here on out -- this is the scary part -- you will have to operate on feel alone. Don't feel too afraid. Each element in the uterus feels different from the others, and as long as you are careful and understand exactly what the procedure involves at each step, it will not be too difficult.
The first step is to break the membrane holding the fetus inside. You can feel around with the forceps for it. To get an idea of what each part looks like -- and to see the texture so that you understand better how it will feel -- I recommend looking at books with photographs of first trimester fetuses (personal recommendation for its astonishing photographs: A Child is Born), The membrane should be easily broken with the forceps. Depending on how far along the pregnancy is, varying quantities of clear or pinkish fluid may come from the vagina. As you grasp the sac with your forceps, twist it away so that it detaches. You will now need to remove small pieces of fetal material and membrane from the uterus with the forceps. Some of these pieces will be distinctly identifiable as fetal material. Save the material until the end of the procedure on a piece of plastic, so that you can be sure the entire fetus has been removed. If doing this sounds too ethically challenging, remember that fetuses do not have the capacity to feel actual pain until the third trimester. You are not "hurting" it, and it has no awareness, nor the capacity for awareness, that you are extracting it.
This portion of the abortion procedure should not be particularly painful for the patient.
While you are removing fetal material, you will also be removing pieces of placenta. However, because the placenta is attached to the uterine wall -- and because it is the blood source for the baby -- bleeding may begin at this time. It is imperative that if bleeding begins at this point in the procedure, you do NOT stop. Stopping the procedure and attempting to stanch the bleeding will not work. The bleeding will stop on its own once the placenta is totally removed from the uterus. It may be scary, but keep going.
Once you have removed most of the material that is removable, you must move on to curettage. By now you will have felt the walls of the uterus with the forceps, and you must move on to using the spoon-shaped curettes. Find the spot on the uterine wall where placenta still clings -- the curette will make a sound much like metal on metal on a clean uterine wall, but will not make the same scraping sound on a place that still needs material removed. Scrape from the uterine walls, scraping material toward the cervix. Use the same general form of stroke you would use to scoop ice cream, and don't be afraid to scrape fairly hard. Scraping softly could leave tissue behind, and if there's anything you don't want, it's that. The other cue that will inform you the uterus is clean is that the patient will generally report feeling a cramp when the clean uterus is scraped, whereas a scrape of placenta will not feel as painful. Listen to your patient and listen to your curettes.
Once the material is removed from the uterine wall, any excess bleeding will generally slow or stop and it's uterine forceps time again. Take the remaining material out with the forceps. Most pieces of fetal material will come out with a simple tug on the forceps (again, don't be too afraid to use force and put a bit of muscle into it). However, at 13-14 weeks the fetal head may be slightly big to bring out. Pinch it with the forceps and take it out in pieces, as well. Make absolutely sure all bone fragments are removed from the uterus, as well as all other material. If necessary, use the curette again to remove remaining material and repeat the procedure with forceps.
By this point, bleeding should be no more than in a normal period, and likely quite a bit less. If the patient is still bleeding heavily at this point, get her to a hospital -- it means you likely did not curette completely, and the hospital will generally complete the procedure as her life is assuredly in danger.
When you feel the curettage and removal is complete, make sure you examine the fetal material you have already extracted. If you're missing anything obvious -- for instance, a head -- make sure to find and remove it.
Allow your patient to rest comfortably on the table if she wishes, or to get dressed. She will likely have some residual bleeding, so make sure you have maxi pads on hand (I would not risk infection from tampons so soon after the procedure). Give her the course of antibiotics and stress to her how imperative it is that she use them as directed. Make sure that she understands any bleeding or problems means she needs to call 911 immediately. When she is ready, allow her to leave -- if sedated, do not allow her to drive home herself. Follow up in a few days and make sure she is not experiencing much bleeding or pain.

Loved the article, your right legal or not women who are in need will find a way.
Today is a sad day for all of us.

I think the pubic shaving suggestion can be disregarded- it's an outdated practice that isn't done anymore except for csections, and even then they only shave a little bit. I've had a LEEP and a d&c and was not shaved for either.

Maybe you could make this infomation into pdfs and make them downloadable so that women's groups can have little booklets of information.

The reason I still recommend shaving is that this is for unexperienced practitioners. Some women may have enough pubic hair that it becomes difficult to see the cervix, and if someone's doing one of their first procedures they don't need any additional problems! :)

The antibiotic advice is dangerous. Not that the rest of it isn't somewhat risky, but ordering antibiotics from a Mexican pharmacy is a dumb idea. Go to your doctor - that way, you know you're not getting a generic knock off, you have a point of contact in case of a resistant infection, and you have a point of contact in case of a bad (allergic or otherwise) reaction.
Don't tell them it's for an abortion if you don't want to; tell 'em you're stocking up for a nuclear holocaust, or shop around until you find one who will hear "I have strep" and prescribe without a fuss.
But there is enough risk in this procedure without unnecessarily adding to it.

I agree, excellent information, and I agree that you should complile them into a single document when you get done.
It is terribly sad that this appears to be the way of the future.

Shannon -- that's a very good idea! I don't have Acrobat, though, so maybe after the three articles (D&C, vacuum asp, and inducing miscarriage) are completed, I hope I can find someone who'd help me put them into that format.

Why are mexican antibiotics dangerous? Counterfeit drugs from other countries are almost always drugs like Oxycontin and other controlled substances. And I'm not sure why anyone would be scared of a "generic knockoff" when most antibiotics you'd normally get are not name-brands.
Going to a doctor and getting a prescription isn't an option for all women -- especially if this information became public and docs were on the lookout for seemingly healthy women acquiring antibiotics. "Shopping around" for a doctor is a hobby for people rich enough to go to another state for their abortion.

hey, i was just wondering if i should post something like this... great idea. i started working in women’s reproductive health care in 1989. i have some photos of dilators, forceps, a speculum, etc. if you’d like them. re: the antibiotics, there is nothing wrong with generic. our patients are given doxycycline, 100mg, twice a day for five days, seven days if second trimester. there are other protocols for tetracycline, ampicillin and zithromycin. all of these antibiotics are also used for ‘common colds’ or respiratory infections. usually, the magic words for getting antibiotics for a cold are something along the lines of ‘green snot’ since discolored mucous is used as an indicator of bacterial infection vs. viral.
in addition to not using tampons, patients should not sit in water [bathtub, swimming pool, hot tub] as the water can carry bacteria up into the uterus since it can take up to two weeks for the cervix to close. sex involving penetration is also discouraged, but orgasms are a-ok.
the best way to check tissue is to put it in a clear glass pyrex pie plate on top of a light box and float it in water. it’s much easier to see the difference between sac and uterine lining.

Great job, Molly! I've been pushing the "Jane" solution for quite some time now and am glad to see somebody else taking up the cause. I'd also be interested in what you might know about herbal abortifacients. We need to get this knowledge out; we need to take our lives in our own hands; we need to go underground if it's necessary. And most importantly, we cannot be afraid to be on the "wrong" side of the law, especially when the law itself is wrong.
At 11:07 AM, Molly said…
subcultureofone: I would LOVE those photos, as I can include them when these documents are put in PDF form. Even for a woman not performing an abortion, I think it's good for a woman receiving (or thinking of receiving) one to understand the procedure as much as possible.
kactus: I will discuss this in an upcoming post. the basic idea is: herbal methods can be dangerous if you don't know D&C procedure.

This is a fantastic resource, thank you. I was wondering if you could share how you have this information - are you a medical practictioner?
At 4:20 PM, Molly said…
I am not a medical practitioner. I do not believe a person needs to be in order to know medicine and how to perform basic medical procedures -- including minor surgery. In a world where lawmakers were threatening to make appendectomies illegal, I'd learn how to do one of those, too.
In essence, my learning has come from several sources: the writings of various abortionists, personal discussions with those who have performed abortions, medical reference texts, and other sources. I have been compiling this data for several years. Everything in this document has been verified by multiple independent individuals who have performed safe D&Cs with good outcomes.

The women of South Dakota do not need to be liberated. Have you asked anyone from South Dakota how they feel about the issue? I am originally from South Dakota. I am pro-life, but I also believe that women should not be forced to seek desperate means in order to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. I believe in the education of women, and I believe that both sides of the issue are being closed-minded about the best way to proceed. I do not think this ban is good for South Dakota. I also do not believe abortions are good for women. It is a difficult subject for sure, but I believe that having an abortion can be just as difficult emotionally as carrying a child to term.
Please do not encourage this type of unsafe behavior and direct it at the women of South Dakota. Honestly, I truly truly feel more offended that you feel the need to liberate me than by the ban that is supposedly opressing me. You are just as bad as the SD legislature by assuming that your choice is my choice.
This is absolutely NOT excellent information, and I am incredibly offended that you would encourage modern women to perform major medical procedures on themselves. We do not live in sod houses any more. But like on so many other issues, people assume they completely understand a state with a completely different culture. I do not claim to speak for all of the women of South Dakota, but I do know that abortion is a very difficult subject for many women I know to discuss, and it disgusts me that you, as a feminist, would take it so lightly.

But, thanks for being woman enough to post the info. I feel for the women who may actually have to take this into their own hands. I am lucky enough to live in a state where clinics are readlity available and located all over. Of course, there are better ones than others, and i do my part by taking the girls who ask me for advice to the places where they will be the most comfortable, receive the best care and counseling if they need it.
This is a scary time for women's rights and we definitely need to stick together.

If you think a woman could perform this procedure on herself, you must be the world's best contortionist. This is not -- assuredly not -- a method for self-inducing.
Pardon me if I don't think that a woman who thinks abortions are "bad for women" would have the best advice on the subject.

Again, reading comprehension seems to be an issue. How in the world could a woman do this to HERSELF without being a remarkable contortionist?
I distinctly mention two people at a minimum -- a practitioner and a patient. This would be impossible as a method of self induction.
You are irresponsible if you believe women shouldn't have the knowledge of what procedures are, when they're being done to their own bodies. Would you think it irresponsible for me to let people know how a tonsillectomy was performed?

Sarah, so the SD Legislature is oppressive for banning all abortions and Molly is oppressive for posting information about performing abortions? Of course,Molly is just disseminating information for anyone who needs it -- and I'm sure there will be women in SD who need it, even if you can't wrap your head around that idea -- while the SD Legislature is enacting law that carries penalties. They're not quite equivalent. And, as long as we're putting anecdotal evidence out there, I've had an abortion and a child, and experienced post-partum depression, but not post-abortion depression.

In essence, my learning has come from several sources: the writings of various abortionists, personal discussions with those who have performed abortions, medical reference texts, and other sources.
Molly, have you had a surgical abortion yourself or been in the room to observe the procedure? These are personal questions I don't necessarily expect you to answer. I'm just asking this because, as a woman who recently had an abortion (under the best of circumstances, very early on, and with no complications) I would be terrified to allow you or any other self-taught practitioner to poke my uterine walls with sharp objects. Don't get me wrong-- I really, really respect what you are doing, I think you have the best of intentions, and the resources you've gathered up will be invaluable to whoever is desperate enough to use them. But D&C is surgery, and it may not be the most complicated surgical procedure in the world, but it is real surgery with real risks and it isn't something doctors learn from textbooks or the internet without instruction and residencies and supervision and so forth. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm glad this info is out there, but it's not something I'm celebrating. DIY abortions and at-home surgery is not empowering and it's not liberating; it's a potential death sentence and it's fucking scary.
At 8:24 PM, Molly said…
I have seen the procedure done. I have not done it myself.
If seeing it done is what makes the difference -- after all, everyone has to actually DO something for the first time, before they become experienced -- then by all means, ask around and perhaps someone will actually let you observe. It happened to me, it may happen to you. Make sure they understand you're not a pro-lifer who's planning to shoot them while they have a curette up someone's vagina, though. That'd be...bad.

Once again, this is a procedure for an illegal abortion CLINIC, not an individual woman. This would require a capital outlay of about $1500-2000 -- more than enough for a single woman to get across state lines, abort, and return. However, this clinical setup would provide many abortions for many women.
Please read the post.
Please, please read the damn post, this is clearly not about a woman SELF-aborting. Good lord. I don't know how many people I've seen make this same reading comprehension mistake. Are you intentionally obtuse?
At 8:48 PM, Molly said…
Ummm, also, "a pair of tweezers" is certainly not what I suggest. If you'll notice, I specifically mention "uterine forceps." If someone decides to use incorrect equipment (even after I specifically discuss the shape and construction of the more esoteric implements), that's not my problem.
Once again, it also isn't a self-abortion procedure.
If a "girl sticks tweezers up herself," she is certainly not following my advice, she's following some made-up advice in her head. My manual discusses sterile, hospital-quality instruments made of surgical steel.
If someone interprets my detailed, step by step notes on performing a first-trimester abortion on a woman and interprets them as "stick something up there and wiggle it around a bit," that's not following my advice at all, now, is it?
This would be the same as if you made a blog post advising a friend to break up with her boyfriend and she responded by stabbing him fifteen times in the skull. Not the same thing, you see?

It would be helpful to include info on emergency contraception and chemical abortion. Chemical abortion with RU-486/mifepristone followed by misoprostol or methotrexate followed by misoprostol are 90%+ effective in the first 8 weeks.
Also, it would be useful for anyone planning this to gather some reference books. Several gynecology/surgery medical books are available by P2P, and recommendations of books and relevant sections would be useful. Many of these are also available inexpensively through online used book dealers.
The free software suite OpenOffice (openoffice.org) can save documents as PDFs. It is similar in functionality to Microsoft Office and runs on any computer.

But the alternative is unthinkable.
We must be prepared to go underground, to defy those who seek to reduce women to the status of livestock. Anyone who believes that the assault on reproductive rights will cease when lines are drawn between red and blue states are kidding themselves.
Underground railroads, safe houses and black market prostaglandins are not enough. Molly's bare bones information is essential to preserving reproductive autonomy.
Our mothers fought this battle pre-Roe, and it is clear we must gear up for post-Roe battles, for those we love, and for those we have never met.

I wonder if there is any information available about how to manufacture RU-486, mifepristone, misoprostol, methotrexate, etc?

This is useful information, but if you can get to Mexico for antibiotics, wouldn't you be able to get to a state with legal abortion?
At 7:29 PM, Molly said…
Stroll: antibiotics from Mexico, et al, can be easily procured via the internet.
You do not have to physically go there.
Additionally, this is information for someone who would set up a clinic, rather than for an individual seeking abortion.
Regarding RU-486 imports, friends are looking into this. Additional research would be appreciated, but there is something important to remember here:
1) RU-486 DEPENDS on legal D&C being available for the less than 10% of the time when the pill does not complete the abortion.
2) RU-486 is only useful up to 9 weeks -- after this point, too many abortions using it are incomplete. Many women do not know they are pregnant until after this point, leaving them in the lurch if medical abortion is all that is available.

Molly, for pictures of instruments, you need not go any further than Google. Just use their images search and search terms like dilators (look for pictures that specify uterine dilators or Heaney dilators), uterine dressing forceps, vaginal speculum, etc. I'm assuming you already know what these items look like, of course.

The people that think pregnancy is preventable must have been found in the cabbage patch. There is such a thing as failed birth control, no matter what kind you use, there is the chance of failure. No method is completely safe, other than abstinance. Therefore, these people must be saying people shouldn't have sex until they are past reproduction age. I am 66 years old, and was date-raped by my fiance' in 1964(in 1964 there wasn't such a thing as date-rape, so I couldn't press chagres) and got pregnant. We ended up getting married because that was what people did back then. We were good parents but I lived in a verbably abusive marriage for 20 years until we got divorced. Everybody is different, and has different beliefs, and should be able to safely practice their beliefs. If there had been safe, legal abortions back then that is what I would have chosen, because I didn't feel ready to be a Mother. So for all the people that say pregnacy is preventable, they are full of baloney.

Molly, I'm very new here and forgive me for jumping in--I'm sure your site is full of great stuff I'd support but on this my mind is just SCREAMING no.
Does anyone see an abusive husband/boyfriend reading this and forcing his captive wife/girlfriend to endure him performing an abortion as he doesn't want no fucking babies?
OR anyone thinking it might not be that hard to penetrate a woman's body and do this at home--not matter how good their intentions?
Again, I aplogize for jumping in--I'm going to spend some time reading your blog, Molly--maybe I'm overreacting. On this, however, my mind is screaming NO NO NO!
At 1:42 PM, Molly said…
Kaka -- do you think abusive boyfriends and husbands wouldn't resort to other methods? Many of the "coathanger" abortions of the 60s were done by those kinds of men. I seriously doubt they're going to read and follow my procedure -- and if they read it, then do something totally different, that's not my fault.
Additionally, this procedure COULD NOT BE DONE for an individual. The supplies would take a month or more to receive. That's just stupid.
Let's also make sure that no one has access to information about sex, because people could use it to rape women. That's the same thing as what you're saying.

I think this is going to be much more useful information in the future, because I don't hold out a lot of hope once this case reaches the Supreme Court.
I think it's wiser right now, though, to try to keep organized so we can help these women and girls get to states where they can get the abortion done. We need to spread the word now more than ever about CounterCrisi.org, among other places.
It wouldn't hurt to start some sort of underground distribution of RU-486, either. It would have to be preferable to a D&C early on in the pregnancy.

This is obviously meant for a worst case scenario. Seriously, who is going to go to an illegal clinic unless they have to? Women have always needed access to abortion. My great Aunt had to do this for women in Melbourne in the 30s; Women who physically and/or financially could not support another child.
What a tragedy you have had to post this. It makes me feel sick to the stomach that something like this is necessary. That such a procedure should have to be taken out of the hands of professionals because of these blow hards. People who think you are encouraging backyard abortions are missing the point. No, a backyard operation is not good, it's dangerous and awful, and I hope that no one has to go through it, but if it's the only option, so be it.
I find this so upsetting.

Hard to get past this "stupid" dig but you're right--I read it as advocating that it could be done for individual, not medically trained individuals perfoming the procedure. My mistake. I don't think any lay person should attempt it, but it seems I guess, a big "duh" of me to have read that into it.
"Let's also make sure that no one has access to information about sex, because people could use it to rape women. That's the same thing as what you're saying."

As the post quotes above illustrate the past twenty-thirty years of our having wide spread access to abortion has led to many people being completely unable to fathom the possible atrocity of abortion not being available. Amazing.
Then we have another, (surprise a man) who posts that Molly should make sure and remind women that they should stuff objects up their vagina in the hopes of inducing an abortion. Oh so concerned for the fairer sex aren't we!
Keep women ignorant, afraid and then very likely dead. Yeah, that'll teach 'em to go and have sex and all that.
Gawd. I'm sick. Good work Molly, just didn't think so many of these posts would give me the creeps. Worse than reading the details of the procedure.

Regarding sterilization
If a pressure cooker is used, a steamer insert that holds the instruments above the water is required. Any autoclave safe plastics (such as autoclave bags)
should be kept at least an inch away from the walls to prevent damage.
Do not start the timer until steam is being vented and the weight is rocking.
You must make sure that steam is continuously vented and the weight rocking the entire time.
Hinged tools should be autoclaved in the open position. The process of sterilization does not begin until all air has been vented. Add about 10 minutes for venting. If run out of water, the temperature will rise and materials inside or the pressure cooker itself can be damaged. The pressure cooker should be calibrated at a agriculture extension office.
Autoclave bags (part paper, part plastic) are recomended to keep instruments sterile until use and easily obtained at medical supply houses. A heat sealer is needed to close them. Instruments may also be wrapped in paper or cloth and closed with indicator tape.
Autoclaving without wrapping is called "flash" autoclaving and takes about 7 minutes once the proper pressure has been reached and all air has been vented. This is normally only done for crucial
instruments dropped during surgery
as instruments rust faster when flashed. Instruments should normally be wrapped but this requires longer processing time.
A professionally calibrated and spore tested autoclave is easier to use and more reliable than a pressure cooker since there is
less potential for human error.
However, a pressure cooker is simpler and if you carefully follow proceedure may be more reliable than an uncalibrated surplus autoclave since it is easier for an untrained person to follow proceedure than test for proper equipment functioning.
Whether you use a surplus autoclave or a pressure cooker, spore testing is recommended to test the process.
A spore test kit costs around $200 from medical suppliers. If an autoclave is overfilled with items, items may not be sterilized. Pressure gauges and automatic air venting apparatus can lose calibration. Indicator strips are helpful to prevent confusion between materials to be sterilized and materials which have been sterilized. If these are not availible, paper or labels for a thermal printer can be used.
Indicators do not prove that a sufficient temperature has been acheived for a sufficient duration of time. Ordinary window envelopes (plastic, not cellulose) also provide an indication of processing - the plastic shrinks down to a small chip (the size it was before rolled) at roughly the temperature needed for sterilization. If the window does not shrink completely, sterilization has not occurred. If it does, sterilization is likely but not guaranteed (periodic spore testing is still recommended).
All instruments must be thoroughly cleaned before autoclaving. After cleaning under running water, cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner (hinges open for forceps, etc.) with
detergent is recommended. The ultrasonic cleaner itself should be considered contaminated and nothing cleaned in it should be used without autoclaving (i.e. don't clean and use things which don't require autoclaving in the same cleaner).
Ultrasonic cleaners cost a few hundred dollars. Do not reuse sharps (needles, scalpals, etc).
A dishwasher could also be used; like the ultrasonic cleaner, consider it contaminated and don't use it for anything else other than
pre-autoclave cleaning.
Lubrication of forcep hinges may affect sterilization. Use an autoclave compatible lubricant before sterilization.
I am not a doctor. Reprinting ok.

However, this is clearly not something one can do for oneself and is not in anyway the be-all and end-all of reproductive health knowledge --law or no law.
Every woman should have a copy of the Hot Pants zine put out by Blood Sisters (a Canadian group) that has lots of excellent info on how to take care of your privates and natural solutions to many different problems, including pregnancy.

One magic way to get a prescription for a larger quantity of wide-spectrum antibiotics is "I'm going overseas for XXX months".
Doxycycline is a very effective anti-Malarial drug, and as such you should be taking 100mg a day if travelling to many places outside the USA (feel free to look at the CDC web site to pick an appropriate country that has Malaria-carrying mosquitos).
You'll be able to get 100s of pills at once, rather than saying you have an infection, which would only get enough to provide a 5-14 day treatment cycle.
Doxycycline is also very inexpensive and easily available in any Mexican pharmacy with good quality, since it is commonly used and produced by a few reputable companies in massive, affordable quantities for use in developing countries to control malaria.

1) Can you give any advice on what kind of sedative to use, and in what amount? And can sedatives also be purchased online from Mexican pharmacies?
2) Some additional links would be helpful. For example, can you point us to some of the web sites that sell the required equipment? Can you include any pictures to go along with your descriptions of the implements?
I'm not going to be performing any D&C's myself, but thought these suggestions might make the instructions a little less daunting for someone who has to.

The Crime of non compliance:
"Class 5 felony"
The Punishment for the Crime:
"Class 5 felony: five years imprisonment in the state penitentiary. In addition, a fine of five thousand dollars may be imposed"
Perhaps putting together a list of "minimum penalty" Judges and the Counties they preside over would be a reasonable step. Organizing an emergency legal defense fund for any "Jane clinics" would be prudent, even before a first donation.

Woman are smart enough to know if it is the right thing to do or not. Yes, I had an abortion when I was 19, and my boyfriend broke up (without knowing I was pregnant). In the mean time, people who are offended by this have the choice not to read it. The SD legislature is taking away women's control over their own bodies. There are new standards of false equivalence being minted every day in this country, and this one is a whopper.
It's also depressing how the mainstream press reports on this story - it's all at the abstract "legal challenge to Roe" level. This puts a nice sharp stainless steel point on the discussion.

No, abstinence is not completely safe. Abstinence has a failure rate, just like all other contraceptives. First of all, there is rape. Also, see this post at the Well-Timed Period:
My recent abstinence-related post has elicited this comment: [When it comes to abstinence] "[t]here is no difference between perfect use and typical use. If you have sex, you are no longer abstinent." That is incorrect.
If you are using the abstinence* birth control method and you engage in sexual activity, it doesn't mean you are no longer using the method. It means you are using the method either incorrectly, or inconsistently; the very definition of typical use.

I agree that there should be a provision in the bill for rape and cases where the mother's health is at risk, but that doesn't extend to all pregnancies, the way you make it sound. Pregnancy isn't itself an illness. If you're going to have sex, be prepared to get pregnant, but don't plan on killing anybody for convenience's sake.
You're not standing up for rape victims and sick or underprivileged women by publishing abortion instructions online; you're justifying complete selfishness to women who want to have a good time.
General abortion-related banter and debate aside, the fact that you'd put this online is hideous and disgusting...

Abortion as a birth control method is disgusting and wrong, and I'm blown away that anyone would put this out here for anyone to read.

Of course they did. They had the right to access any information they wanted. So do you. I have the right to access information on the quickest and most successful ways to kill people. You have the right to access information on how to mainline heroin. The right to act upon information is separate from the right to access the information, unless you live in China or some other restrictive society.
The people who are saying that by posting this information Molly is somehow oppressing the women of South Dakota... the mind boggles; the only explanation I can think of is that they're a little bit stupid. How is the posting of information on the internet equal to oppression of anyone, anywhere? She is not, in posting this information, FORCING anyone to have an abortion, whereas the government of the state is forcing everyone to NOT. If you are a woman who lives in South Dakota, and you become pregant, you can choose not to have an abortion, and have your child. That's fine. The state approves it, Molly certainly won't mind, and I really doubt that anyone's going to knock you down in an alley and perform an abortion on you by force simply because they read about how to perform one on the internet. How can you call the posting of this information oppressive?

So you think posting this information is hideous and disgusting? How hideous and disgusting is it for a 14 year old girl to be raped by a family member and be forced to bear her rapist's child? That's what this bill would do-there are NO provisions for rape or incest. If your own wife or daughter were raped, would you want her to be forced to carry her rapist's child to term? Think about it.

Are the antibiotics used for a urinary tract infection considered "broad spectrum?" If so, then an easy legal way to get an Rx for antibiotics is to call your doctor's office and tell them you have a UTI. Symptoms include low back pain, cramping in the side, difficulty urinating and frequent urination. Because an UTI can spread into the kidneys and cause them to fail, most docs will give you antibiotics. Because of an increase in concern about resistance to antibiotics, docs are less likely now to give a course of antibiotics for respiratory causes without examining you. If your symptoms aren't severe enough, an MD might tell you to wait a day or two to see if you improve.
This type of information is way overdue. Even if legal, wide swaths of America have no clinics or abortion providers.

I read about Jane in college, and in recent years have discussed with friends the need for us to learn these techniques before abortion is illegal and our internet sites censored. I will be part of Jane, second generation if it comes to this. What a horrific concept, legislating us back to the dark ages. I suspect Jane already exists on some level as so many states already have very limited reproductive health options. We'll all learn from them. Women, unite.

I was just wondering:
Since when has it become a fact that an unborn child is part of the woman's body?
In fact, not only is that not a fact, it is misinformation. The unborn human child is more like a parasite of the female body. It secretes (along with the placenta) many hormones and various chemicals to prevent the woman's body from destroying it.
If you are trying to justify abortion by saying that the unborn child is part of the human female's body...you are only fooling yourself.

I'm furious that it's come to this- that we need to start thinking about setting up illegal underground clinics in order to safeguard a basic right. I'm not in SD, but the idea of being forced to carry a fetus to term terrifies me to the point of nightmares. If I were to conceive, I'd do everything in my power to terminate the pregnancy (or my own life, if I cuold abort). As a female-to-male transperson who isn't on testosterone yet, I'm in that wide category of 'people who can conceive but can't carry a pregnancy due to mental health reasons'.

Politics and religion aside, it is plain to see the self-centered perspective of the proponents of this blog.
I hate to generalize too much, but the issue seems to be people looking at individual freedom at the expense of other people.
At the deepest level, a child is a unique life. Whether a person rationalizes a deadline for this "uniqueness" to happen is immaterial.
Termination of a fetus is a selfish decision, no matter what the circumstances (as horrid as the creation may be.) No consideration is given toward the new creation (or the possibility of the future of the child). The only consideration is for the mother's future reproductive "freedom".
Let the abortionist legitimize whatever the'd like, but don't deny the selfish, self-centered motivation of any choice.
Celebrate your reproductive rights, but accept responsibility for not recognizing the rights of others.

Is it just me, or why hasn't anybody talked about doing these procedures overseas? Medical tourism to India, Asia and South America has taken off for plastic surgury. While this would be a stopgap solution, there are clinics overseas that have competent medical staff and clean facilities.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know that it is a big constitutional issue and all that, but I'm more interested in the health and welfare of the patients. My mother had an abortion in Mexico before Roe v. Wade and while it was safe, there were some complications. If my mother wouldn't have had that abortion, I most likely wouldn't have been born or I would be living in welfare today.

Molly,
I agree with many commenters-- this is valuable information should our country ever come to forcing women to obtain abortions illegally again.
I know you've addressed the question of your sources in at least one of your responses to another blogger; however, I would really appreciate it if you would post a bibliography of the sources you drew from in compiling your "abortion manual". Many people, myself included, recognize the value of your distilled version of this information, but would also like to read the original literature. There is never anything wrong with an 'additional reading' section; in fact, most academics become familiar with the literature in their field by looking up and reading the sources listed in the bibliographies of each paper they read.
I can see the point of bloggers who are concerned about women or teenage girls who might choose to use this information and end up inflicting harm on themselves. I think there are a few things you could do to make your post a little bit more user-friendly. I absolutely agree with you that the free sharing of information should never be restricted, but as I doubt your disclaimer is legally binding clarifying parts of your post could be to your benefit. I’m no legal expert, but I suspect that if it ever came down to it, you could end up with a nasty lawsuit against you. Reading comprehension, sadly, is not stellar in most of the population of this country. You might consider changing the format slightly, presenting it more as an overview of how the procedure could be done, rather than as a how-to guide directly addressing the reader. It would be helpful to post a link or give a source for the abundance of information you say exists on how to use a speculum properly. I have no aversion to doing additional research, but I also realize that many people might not be as proactive or might forget to do so, and the easier you can make it for them, the better the quality of your post.
Aside from those suggestions, though, I want to say thank you for having the guts to post this information, and at the very least get people thinking concretely about the awful ramifications of the law the SD legislature so irresponsibly passed.

in response to Andrew (at 8:31):
"'They lost only one patient in 13,000-- a lower death rate than that of giving live birth.'"
"That should read 'they lost only 13,000 in 26,000,' assuming they were all single babies."
Let's do some simple arithmatic.
-13,000 women
-assuming all single-child pregnancies, 13,000 embryos/fetuses
13,000+13,000=26,000
SO, if only one woman died at the hands of Jane, and if you insist on counting 14 week old fetuses as people, then your tally should read:
"they lost only 13,001 in 26,000".
Because Jane was so good, the difference here does not jump out at the eye: one life. But the point made by your omission is enormous and critical to the debate you're bringing up.
In attempting to refocus the discussion on the death of fetuses, you completely disregarded the lives of the WOMEN who are pregnant. This has long been a practical point made by pro-choice thinkers. Women have always sought abortions and will always seek abortions, for a variety of reasons. When abortions are not safe and easily accessible, women die horrific deaths. Note to all trolls: women, in fact, are over the age of 17 weeks and do feel pain, as well as a range of emotion.
No matter how frequently they are ignored by the pro-life movement, THE LIVES OF OMEN MATTER!
Thank you, Molly, for posting information that could help ensure the safety and accessibility of abortion in the face of the spectre of government oppression.

my intention here is not to state an opinion on the right for a woman to have an abortion, but consider this, please.
you purport to be providing this information for people who want to open a clinic--which would have to be an underground clinic. it seems to me that there are enough pro-choice folks out there with sympathetic TRAINED MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS willing to do the deed, that you do not need to disseminate this information to garage hacks. that’s my concern. performing an abortion is not like fixing a car, or learning to grow pot in your closet. the implications if performed improperly are tremendous.
i realize that the dialogue that comments provide is intended to enrich the original posting, but the fact that you fail to articulate in your original post the importance of things like no sex, baths, how to monitor the ‘patient,’ watching for fever, etc., leads me to believe that your intentions were not thought fully through. and when providing information on a surgical procedure, ALL aspects need to be considered.
don’t take this as a dig at you—just please consider to whom you are making this information easily accessible. your audience is clearly NOT those wanting to set up a ‘legitimate’ illegal clinic. you’ve provided enough information that garage hacks WILL substitute instruments, and compromise safety, but not enough information for them to understand the risks.
again, i truly believe that trained, medical practitioners will make certain that women have access to SAFE procedures. please, please, please...i know it’s a bloggers sacrilege to remove a posting, but this is just plain dangerous.

Regardless of where you fall on this, please don't make assumptions about South Dakotans and SD politics when you have never even stepped foot in the state. Likening SD to communist China is bit overboard.
I just ask that people refuse to stereotype or generalize South Dakotans based on this issue alone -- that is the easy way out.
At 9:13 AM, Molly said…
Have you ever been to Communist China? If not . . . how do you know the comparison is wrong, based on what you've just said?
States are judged by their legislatures, for good or for ill. This will not change. If you would like people's views of the state to change, please vote in and work hard to vote in people who are not idiots. I realize some South Dakotans already do this, but at the end of the day, you will still be judged a bit based on the laws of your state. I'm more likely to think someone from Alabama would be anti-gay-marriage than someone from Massachusetts, even though I have had only minimal contact with people in those two states. If this provides as a wakeup call that people will now view South Dakotans in this way, so be it. Maybe things will change.
At 9:57 AM, Nicole said…
First of all, should I choose someone for office based strictly on where they fall on the pro-choice/pro-life spectrum? This seems short-sighted at best. I know I was quite annoyed during the 2004 election that many people voted for Bush simply because he was pro-life (and with that, many people voted against Kerry because he was pro-choice). So am I to now turn around and do the same thing? There are many, many issues facing SD and the nation, of which abortion is but one. Frankly, I am more concerned with overturning the PATRIOT Act and stopping our nation from becoming a police state.
Also, if you knew South Dakota, you would know that they're quite fiercely independent. While this issue and the recent legislation seems at odds with this (and it is), it remains true that South Dakotans are by and large against the over-imposition of the federal government and government in general (thus my distaste for the likeness to communist China).
Furthermore, I would like to note that while South Dakota's state legislature breaks down as being more conservative, its federal representation includes a Democratic senator and Democractic house rep (a Republican senator rounds out the lot). SD was also recently represented by all Democratic reps.
"Have you ever been to Communist China?"
No, but have you ever been to South Dakota?
Also, I would like to clarify that I am not necessarily against the subject of your original post. I am however against the arrogance and condescension emanating from its introduction and the comments that followed. I thinks it's fair to ask that people hold off generalizing South Dakota (or really anyone/anything) -- stereotyping is rarely accurate.

I have watched lots of abortion procedures because I am a patient advocate (person who helps a patient breathe and relax and I also explain what's going on)and I am always glad that safe abortions are legal. They are not hard to perform, but it must be done with caution and care. Don't forget that the woman is scared too, but it is the right choice for her at that time.
I'm still not quite sure about the math comment. If 1/26000 is multiplied and doubled, wouldn't you get 2/52000? Or something like that? Soemthing still rediculously small? Math was never my best subject.

It's marvelous that in todays society medical equipment and antibiotics can be ordered online and "user-friendly" manuals such as these are available. On the flip-side of the coin, many other advances have been made, namely in law enforcement.
Because of the advances it might be safer for these underground clinics to operate, but it might also be more dangerous. Modern technology needs to be used to secure the privacy of the practicioners and the patients.
Look into encrypted communications such as Skype and encrypting all records, if any. Since things will be ordered online, use TorPark as your webbrowser and use a HushMail email address.
You have outlined a professional procedure, not a dark-alley abortion. This means that, most likely, this operation will need a fixed location to operate out of. The patients should NOT be given the location! They need to meet in a neutral place, such as a hotel room, and change into clothes given by the provider and transported without their posessions. This will prevent GPS trackers, audio and video bugs, etc. If anything seems "hinky" there will be nothing at the hotel that is evidence.
After the procedure at the clean location, they could be taken back to where they were picked up.
If someone who reads this decides to start their own clinic, they should be applauded but they need to realize the possible outcome... many many years in jail. With the way the country is going, a fetus might be declared a human life and performing operations like this could be considered murder.
Take all precautions possible.

It's amazingly brave of you to be posting all of this information. There's no doubt in my mind that the same bastards who've pushed this legislation through are going to be pushing their mouthpieces in the legislature to criminalize sharing this kind of information.
As a guy, I've always stuck to the simple principle that I'm in no position to comment with any authority on what a woman is experiencing when she's facing an unplanned/unwanted pregnancy.
It's not a feminist position, or a liberal one, or a conservative one. I'm none of the above. It just makes sense to me to look at things that way.
But none of us should be surprised that this has happened, and will happen in more and more states. Let's face it: When we look at what the right in this country is doing, and will be doing, we're kidding ourselves if we don't admit that we're getting what we deserve.
Whether it's "greens" who buy SUVs, or advocates of "civil rights" who don't want people of other races/religions living in their neighborhoods, or "free speech" advocates who don't concern themselves when ideas they don't personally like are censored... we've all been damned lazy, while the forces of repression and control have been busy as little wicked bees.
I'd like to believe that this kind of thing will inspire action. I fear that it might not. 49% of this country did NOT vote for the creep on Pennsylvania Ave., but they've acted as if they were only some tiny fringe minority, so small and powerless that they consider themselves lucky to just be allowed to live.
Freedom is going to take a fight. Let's see if any of us actually is willing to get his or her nose bloody.
Looks like you're one of those who IS willing, Molly. Good luck. Watch your back.

I live in Australia where abortion is accessible. The process involves consultation with a counsellor and GP at a clinic who sign you off as needing to terminate due to "undue financial stress" etc. All up, at a reputable clinic it costs about $300.
I've had 4 terminations in a period of 6 years.
I've used many forms of contraception, and they clearly do not work. The pill actually had the reverse affect, and I fell pregnant with triplets!!
It often saddens me that the USA is as fucked up as it, saddens me more that Australia can't wait to follow suite.
I think all women should have a good understanding of the abortion process - I was 16 when I had my first, and it was down right daunting.
But more then anything, if you chose to abort a pregnancy, AT ALL COSTS, seek a supportive, safe, and clean environment. The procedure itself may be easy, but you need to be surrounded by practioners who are supportive of your decision and will not judge you.
Also - even if a termination costs up to a few thousand, its worth every cent if it means that in 5 yrs you are still able to have children. Don't go for the cheap option, there is too much at stake!
Perhaps if you post such detailed information, there should also be contacts for support networks for women are post abortion.
And remember, if it comes to it, come for a holiday in Oz....

OK, Look: Im pro-abortion, but this is
crazy to be advocating back-alley
abortions by non-medical personnel.
if you need an abortion in a (fascist)
state that doesnt have accessible abortion
facilities, go out of state to an actual
clinic which performs abortions.
an amateur scraping the utereus can easily
make a mistake, causing scarring and
bleeding, rendering the patient sterile or,
worse, dead.
an amateur has absolutely NO idea how to
handle these and other complications when
the procedure turns sour -- to facilitate
non-professionals in performing this NON
routine procedure should obviously be seen
as careless, irresponsible, and just plain
stupid.
If you want to help facilitate abortions
you can:
* work for legal societies that are fighting
anti-abortion laws.
* work for planned parenthood clinics, etc.
* help women with transportation, costs, etc.
associated with getting to legal clinics
* help get information out about the various
resources that are available, depending on the
state.
But, really, to help non-professionals perform
abortions??
CRAZY.
[PS, Some have suggested this is a satire, a

There's just way too much instructive detail

I heard a speech from a prominent Hollywood figure one time discussing how they adopted their child and paid the pregnant woman $450,00 (and met and approved her ahead of time) to ensure a healthy delivery. Of course, they did it the legal way, and found a woman who had already done this for others, but surely that would be a preferable choice for some- Hey, it would be the most lucrative 9 months work I could do!
I am not being sarcastic; I think that we deserve the freedom to do whatever we want, and that having all of the options possible can only help women.

Thanks, Molly, for doing this; but before this is put into final form, it might be good to have an actual abortion doctor who performs abortions edit it (sterilization, gloving up, curretting "feel", etc). No offense to you Molly, but it would be good for all of us in these dark times if this information is the best it can possibly be. Any doctors out there who want to add information to this manual?
Also, considering how many people were confused, you might want to title the pdfs, "Instructions for starting an Abortion Clinic".
When earlier posters said that this was about "women doing surgery on themselves", they might have meant as opposed to men doing it on them.

Hi, Molly. I am not a woman, nor american - but a person should not have to be vulnerable in order to become sensitive to social issues(*).
Anyway, I just would like to give an external-viewer congratulation - the issue here, in my opinion, is much less about whether or how this info will be used(**), and more about letting the legislators know that women will do whatever they have to in order to protect their rights.
Keep up this great work!
(*) However, abortion is illegal here in Brazil - and our legislators are under heavy influence of right-wing religious movements and american mainstream media, so this law can become somewhat an issue here).
(**) And people: even non-native readers as myself can easily understand that this is *not* a self-applied practice, *nor* it is meant to be applied with low-quality material or procedure (maybe low-budget, but definetly there is concern for safety here).

Tell you what -- instead of providing women with information for killing a life that is completely dependent on them, why don't you teach them how to not get pregnant? There's only one reason for having sex in the first place, and that is to give life to a child. If you don't want a child, don't have sex -- it's that simple.
But, of course, you won't listen to this. 'Every woman should have the right to choose what to do with her own body.' Fine -- but what about somebody else's body? Where do you draw the line? What makes the child post-birth any more valuable in your eyes than the pre-birth child? At what point do you say that it's wrong to kill? When the child speaks his first intelligible thought?
You disgust me. I cannot begin to comprehend the vacuity of a conscience that would value the mother's convenience over the child's right to life. It's the closest thing to cold-blooded murder that can be legally done -- the unnatural and intentional termination of an innocent life by one who has (supposedly) full use of their faculties. Here's to the day when such people are treated like the murderers they are.
And for those who cry 'What about rape?', I respond , 'What about it?' Yes, it's a horrible crime. But are you going to make it go away by commiting a crime of your own? Will murdering a child actually help you heal from the crime of rape? If so, then perhaps you need to seriously re-evaluate your own morals.

Couple of problems:
How does one know how much pain the fetuses feel? In other words, how can anyone tell how much pain someone else would feel? The fact that they can't communicate it, does it mean that there is no pain?
The ethical and logical fallacy here is that if someone doesn't feel pain it is somehow more 'ok' to kill them than if they did feel pain. Going by that, if after an accident or some toxic exposure, someone looses the ability to feel pain, it would be easier run over them with a steamroller. The attitude also only concerns the 'guilt' or feeling of the one doing the killing not the subject of the procedure.
The other problem is with the antibiotics. What kind of antibiotics are we talking about here? What about the dosage. The person could be infected with a gram positive bacteria and you can administer antibiotics that kill gram negative bacteria only.
Also, if you screw up and seriosly injure or kill the woman, at least you can sue the doctor and you can check his/her public record. How do I know that Joe Back Alley doctor has been loosing every other patient -- there is no public record, and they won't tell...

Isn't there a pill that will induce an abortion? Its not an abortion pill or the day after but medication to deal with other problem but one side effect is that it can induce an abortion. I remember reading about it on The New York Times about the FDA or some federal group might be asked to prevent/restrict the medication so it is not used for abortions.

Hey Molly,
I agree that information is power. Religious and ethical debates aside (and I know that some cannot put them aside, but that's not my problem) you're absolutely correct to be publishing this information. If I was pregnant and desperate to get rid of it, God only knows what I would do without help or any information. Probably punch myself in the lower stomach a lot, or eat 5 packs of birth control pills.
Regarding concerns that medical professionals are required, I agree. I also think that if someone were serious about setting up a secret clinic, it would not be hard to get a sympathetic nurse or doctor to train them.
Oh yeah, one more thing.
Congratulations - You've been boingboinged!

I think the need to post such desperately chilling information in a personal blog is very telling. When all other traditional reliable sources are exhausted it comes back to those with a conscience. I hope that no one is ever as fool hardy to actually use this information alone to perform an actual abortion but I do realise its importance in the sphere of public knowledge. Thank you for having the gumption to post this information.

Because of its abortifacient properties, it should not be taken by pregnant women."
one could also google "induce abortion" and it will mention Misoprostol.

Thank you for posting this. I think the discussion that it's provoked has been great. I think in the jump to make abortion illegal there's a lot people have forgotten. I've become even more pro-choice since having my own child who happens to be a girl. I also wanted to ditto this -
"In attempting to refocus the discussion on the death of fetuses, you completely disregarded the lives of the WOMEN who are pregnant. This has long been a practical point made by pro-choice thinkers. Women have always sought abortions and will always seek abortions, for a variety of reasons. When abortions are not safe and easily accessible, women die horrific deaths. Note to all trolls: women, in fact, are over the age of 17 weeks and do feel pain, as well as a range of emotion."
So many "pro-life" advocates are only "pro-fetus" advocates. The sponsor of the SD bill has voted against programs that would help low income children. No one ever seems to take into account what a woman's body goes through during pregnancy as if it's easy to just make the decision to put the kids up for adoption. B/c I had pregnancy induced hypertension I will likely have high blood pressure problems later in life. My mother almost died giving birth to both of my sister and I b/c of conflicting blood types. The list goes on of what can happen. When it comes to a woman's reproductive health there is so much more to consider than just the fetus.

Here's another suggestion...tell the "patient" to deliver the child and allow one of the thousands of sets of childless parents to adopt him or her. Remember, it's not a "choice" it's a child.

Beside being reactionary, this post is incredibly irresponsible. People in difficult circumstances often do dangerous (and stupid) things, and you are leading them to believe a DIY abortion is a safe and necessary solution. It is neither.
First the safety issue: I will not argue with your dubious statistics, but just because there is one example of a safe DIY abortionist (with years of experience assisting) you can not expect comparable results for everyone that downloads your pamphlet. By implying that this is a safe procedure you are only endangering more women. The simple solution is to BUY A BUS TICKET TO MINNESOTA.
Spare us the histrionics. Even if a fifth conservative is added to the Supreme Court *and* this hypothetical conservative block decides to break precedent *and* Roe v. Wade is overturned – abortion will still be legal in most of the country under any realistic scenario.
There will however be plenty of young kids in trouble that don’t want to get on a bus because its inconvenient or their family will find out. Those people will try to use your information at their peril.

I don't want to believe that it has come to this. But how can I believe otherwise, when I live in a state where a 17-year old boy has gotten a life sentence for kicking his pregnant girlfriend until it caused a miscarriage of twins? At his girlfriend's request. The girl had been jogging and hitting herself in the abdomen to cause a miscarriage, but failed to do so. She stood by him throughout the trial and testified that it was her idea; because of her legal right to abortion, she could not be prosecuted herself. They are poor Hispanic kids in very conservative, halfway rural Lufkin, so legal abortion was probably an unobtainable alternative.

These are reference to increased risk of breast, cervical, and uterine cancers following abortions, along with the increased risks of future ectopic pregnancy, premature birth, and difficulty concieving---if the woman later chooses to.
While you do have a right to post any infomation of your choice into your blog, please include the long-term risks that could follow if someone chose to take it upon themselves to do as you have suggested will be the only alternative to SD's possible ban on abortions...and yes, I did get that you said this is not to be self-induced. Rather than recommending people set up illegal surgical clinics, why not suggest the establishment of a RU486 blackmarket/smuggling ring?
Mifepristone/misoprostol induced abortion is safer than surgical abortion or delivery (note the oral form is safer than the vaginal suppository), and in the first trimester is safe to use in the home. Also see this paper
While a small percentage of women fail to abort with the mifepristone/misoprostol, it reduces the number that would have to expose themselves to a surgical procedure.
Finally I would recommend that everyone who lives in these shitty red states and has the sense and resources should move immediately. It's sad these states have to relearn the lessons of the past, but there is no reason the people of these states should stay if they can leave while the retards who passed this ban rediscover why abortion bans don't work.

So my mother's family is from South Dakota, and sometimes Oregon, and when my grandmother was facing another pregnacy during the Depression she was recommended by her mother to use a knitting needle through the cervix to force a miscarriage. I wish to God that Molly's courageous information had allowed there to be access to abortion for my grandmother who had six kids, I don't know how many pregnancies, and lost her teeth from malnutrition. All becuase it was not considered rape if you are married nor was birth control easily available or reliable.
I don't believe that times have changed that much, unplanned pregnancies occur even with birth control. My grandmother was robbed of her strength and health by having babies, let alone her person (not that she did not love every one!). As I understand it, to kill an unborn is homicide according to the Old Testament only after quickening, which happens at 16-20 weeks - far beyond the parameters of Molly's directions.
Praise God for Molly for valuing the life of a woman beyond what she can birth! Praise for being so fearless! I wish I had Molly's guts!

I want to thank you for this post - I had a butcher abortion in the late 60's and then became an underground counselor. I was looking for the How to do Your Own Abortion materials and could not find them. Then another woman posted a link to your blog on a Madison Wisc., forum. I will link to your blog and this article on my own. But I am here to pass on the word of what a wonderful org is doing in Madison, WI. They are a foundation set up to pay for poor women's abortions and they are organizing a boycott of the SD tourism industry. The other big industry in South Dakota is cattle which we all subsidize with our taxes. We should also figure out how to boycott their beef. Here are things and links we have written on the subject below. Translate the info for your own states.
It is the Women's Medical Fund that is organizing the South Dakota boycott. They raise money to help poor women get abortions. After my abortion I worked as an underground counselor to help other women get to New York. They helped me save many women's lives by giving me money to pay those women's way to New York. Only one women was lost because we could not help her fast enough. She perforated her uterus with sharpened plastic tubing and died. This organization (the women's medical fund )saved many others who would have done the same thing. They remember and so do I - that is why they are organizing - help them.

Women's Medical Fund

So now is the time to put our money where our mouths are and to start taking names.
The big Pro-choice groups are going to work for the Democrats and that is fine but we know that the issue cannot be left to the politicians - to let the politicians decide whether we can be free means we will not be free.
What the pro choice people must do is make South Dakota regret this action to deny the civil rights of women and men. There is only one thing that will do that - financial retribution.
By law in Wisconsin, if a citizen gathers 15% of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election in their town, village or city, the local government is required to adopt their resolution or place it as a referendum on the ballot in the next election. This is called the citizens ballot initiative.
You call the WI Election Commission and find out what that number is in your city, town or village. You collect double or triple that number of names and addresses just to be sure. Ask the state Election Commission questions about the requirements to make a petition valid.
You write a statement such as, "It is hereby resolved that the city [of Madison, Janesville, Stoughten your city, whatever] shall not purchase any goods or services of any kind from South Dakota, nor travel to South Dakota for any conference (they have conferences with other state Dr's because they are big on trophy hunting in south Dakota) until that state rescinds their law denying women the right to abortion.
Keep it simple so that many people can go out with a clipboard and get signatures on their own to submit at a public meeting to the elected body. Then there will be no disputes about the wording of the referendum.
Also, put pressure on our local store not to sell those products.
Now let's see if pro-choice people can organize to defend their rights or if they will wait for someone else to do it for them.

Regarding the comments about going to other states or countries for abortions - please note that the "Jane solution" was, among other things, a solution for women of limited means. Not everyone has a car, not everyone can buy a plane ticket, not everyone can get away from their lives to go who knows how far away to have an operation, recouperate, and get home. Abortions should not only be safe, legal, and rare, but also accessible.

I hope ,for your sake, that no woman dies after you and or someone else does this procedure after reading your page. You can, and most likely will be held liable. Personally I hope you get bitch slapped by the law. Not only are you aiding and abeting the murder of an infant, but putting the women you are trying to "liberate" into harms way. A woman who chooses to let a simpleton with a pressure cooker and cervix dilators perform an invasive procedure is clearly deficient, and deserves whatever happens. All life is precious, and as my 2 y/o daughter says, God knows me. It was a sad day when America condoned the murder of millions of defenseless citizens, a holocaust to say the least. Modern American women are informed and birth control is avaliable virtually everywhere, why is adortion still an option as "birth control?" So some woman being a moron, the child has to pay? Makes no sense, act responsible. Abortion for birth control should be illegal. I know the argument, my body, etc.., that's correct, YOUR body don't act like an idiot maybe some women should practice discretion. Abortion should only be allowed for preservation of life, to include rape and incest optional to the mother. However, I can't imagine if my wife, whom was raped before I met her, had aborted, we wouldn't have a wonderful and smart 6 y/o boy. Abortion isn't always the answer.

I'd like to expand on what Gordon K said a little bit. Obtaining antibiotics can be difficult, but if you can get them easily, try a very powerful and broad spectrum one like Tequin or Zithromax. (generic names are gatifloxacin and azithromycin, respectively)
I hate that this information even has to be published and though I'd not perform one myself, I have referred many women to a clinic where abortions are performed. (It's just a personal choice and I would only give her a risk/benefit assessment and urge her that if she were to decide to have one, the earlier the better. I'd hate to see her come back with complications. Lecturing/berating a woman - especially a teen - who's facing this decision is just ... cruel. She's already tormented enough internally; she doesn't need some do-gooder making her feel worse.)

I cannot believe this is happening in the 21st century, moreover, in the US. I cannot believe I live in a world where someone else decides what you should do with your own body. I cannot believe there’re so many people who support the abortion ban because of their beliefs or simply because they are not affected by it. I cannot believe men even dare to speak against abortion.
I’m a guy and certainly not affected by it but I am angry when someone uses his power to enforce his own beliefs among others. Abortions should be legal, accessible and should not be treated with disapproval from the society. So if you think having an abortion is wrong, simply don’t have it! Make your own decision and let others to decide for their selves.
Denying abortion to someone means forcing her to carry the pregnancy to term… nine month of nausea, back pain, sleepless nights, mobility difficulties, pain, emotional stress, possible complication during the delivery, leftover scars and god know what else. What if the woman had different plans? Well screw them! Nobody cares! She’s pregnant now and that’s all that matters. /sarcasm.
We are humans and we have choice. Live with it!
Molly, you rock! The article is great! And since the world we’re living in is becoming worse and worse (thanks to mindless people who govern us), I’m afraid we’re gonna need more articles like this.

Wow. wow. This post is a FABULOUS way to highlight the need for BIRTH CONTROL, because a D&C is clearly no walk in the park.
What's saddest about all this is not the abortion itself, as all the pro-lifers think, it's that there are women who feel such black, deep desperation that they would be willing to undergo a back-alley abortion.
I'm so sick of the government or anyone else thinking they have a right to control my body. It is not a child, it is a fetus. And if I decide to be responsible, and safely terminate a pregnancy early on, it is my choice to do so.
MY BODY. MY CHOICE.

I'm not happy to see that information, but I know damn well it would could turn out to be needed. People keep thinking you're talking about a pregnant woman reading your post and going, "Oh! I'll give it to myself!", but I didn't read that at all. Setting up a clinic like this takes months, this isn't for women making a snap decision, this is for a group of like-minded individuals who know that if abortion is illegal, someone has to provide a safe alternative to possible serious injury.
Like I said, I'm not happy to see it but that's because it reminds me of how low we're going as a country.
To all those pro-lifers: if abortion turns out to have been a 'sin' all along, that's really between the woman and her possible god, isn't it? Not for you to decide.

i just wanted to thank you, molly, and all of the women who are posting in these comments who realize we have to get to work to protect women's rights or create an underground alternative when the powers-that-be (none of whom can ever have a pregnancy to begin with!) decide they can legislate what women do with their own bodies.
i could spend the rest of this comment refuting all of the outlandish claims that the pro-birth* posters have made regarding fetuses feeling pain and women keeping their legs together, like women make babies all on their own without, oh i don't know, MEN'S BODIES WHO ARE 50% OF THE SEX AT TO BEGIN WITH. nowhere on these pro-life comments do any of these sexist asshats mention how men should keep their legs closed. but i would rather say THANK YOU to all of the men of all different sexual orientations who have posted in support of women's right to choice and control one's own body. you are so very important as allies, and it just warms my heart knowing that such allies exist.
i am not a baby farm, and i refuse to let any of my sisters be reduced to baby farms, either.
*and i say pro-birth because these people are often not actually pro-life. they do not care about the life of the rape or incest victim. they do not care about the lives of the poor women who are forced to raise 8 children if their husbands do not back off and if they cannot get plan b anywhere because the government actually does not care about birth control. go look at the court cases from the '70s where women had to fight for their right to even take birth control if they were not married!

From a South Dakota woman, thank you.
Currently we can only get abortions in one clinic, one day of the week. Many women have to go out of state because then can not get an appointment time.

This will not stop abortion in South Dakota. It will only make it unsafe.

Amazing the folks who disagree who are too chickenshit to leave their names.
Ten years ago I read the instructions from A WOMAN'S BOOK OF CHOICES on how to do a D&E, based on the techniques that were found in the late 60s. I would have thought, 33 years after Roe vs. Wade, the issue would have been settled, that those who availed themselves of safe, legal abortions would become avidly pro-choice.
I do wish the anti-abortion folks would come up with new arguments. It's not a baby or child to be, and if my mother had abortion as a choice, I'd hardly be in a condition to complain now.

Regarding shaving the pubic area, I think this should be done just because it's sexy.
It's not as sexy as using pressure cooked instruments to poke at the placenta. But not everything can or should be sexy... like abortions.
Maybe the women in search of South Dakota abortions should find a nice big true American Indian man (one really well hung, which is a trick in itself I hear) and allow herself to be forcibly penetrated deeply enough that the Indian's penis bashes the fetus to smithereens. Then, once the rape-abortion is complete, all the white folks of South Dakota can go on a manhunt to track down and kill that Injun and bring him to justice.
What's with these people who post "Thanks for the great article!" Or "love your sharing this with us." Look, I'm not afraid of information -- but I am afraid of stupidity -- and it's becoming glaringly more apparent that there is, indeed, a Confederacy of Dunces, as Jonathan Swift declared, who are running things. Abortion laws have been created over the years exactly BECAUSE of people like Molly who might practice the so-called Jane technique. Don't be fooled by the equation that a woman's reproductive rights have anything to do with trumping the right of another to live. Such a philosophy is simply selfish and illogical.
I mean, come on, what a warp, twisted world we live in when someone abuses free speech to post this type of crap and filth. This is -- to most God fearing people -- the true pornography of our day. Molly, you should rename your blog, "Molly Paves the Way..." to destroy the moral fiber of America. May God have mercy on your black-encrusted soul.

How come people are so horrified this info might be necessary? Laws are not immutable. They always occupy some human and policy space between the real and the ideal. They are made by people, who make decisions that are affected by the opinions & leverage - like voting, or money - of other people. There's been a lot of pressure against abortion laws (duh, I know) and the law is changing. If you think an ideal society allows abortions that are safe, legal, rare and accessible, apply the pressure. So many reasonable people agree - even those that love children, respect life, would sustain pregnancies in very challenging circumstances, etc..
And I'll add my thanks for this, with the hope that your next 3 articles will make it intact on to this site - coppy it widely, folks, keep a copy off-line - and thanks too for the clearheaded reminder of the lousy (but not impossible) alternative to sane legislation and pro-active policy.
The minute I started reading news stories about ND and now MS, I remembered that term of many decades ago - "menstrual extraction" - and Googled it, wondering what underground safe/accessible movement would be needed to get it going. Sounds like you are way ahead, of me at least. Thanks, and here's to getting the law and policy back in line.

I would echo the post of an earlier. It would be good to have an actual abortion doctor's advice in this matter, for an extra layer of safety. This does seem to be sound technique, but all the same.

I'm so sick of all these crazy men saying that it's a woman's fault for getting pregnant. It takes 2 people to have sex. Maybe we should stop sleeping with men period. Would that do it? Better yet, women, tell your man you won't sleep with him until he has a vasectomy if he's so convinced that abortion is wrong.
I think Molly's next post should be about how to cut off his balls and hand them to him. Don't forget the antibiotics! ;)

As a former abortion provider, I have mixed feelings about this. I think that in many ways, women should take it upon themselves if the government, local or Federal, makes legal abortion no longer accessible or no longer legal. However, I can't stress enough how D&E or suction curettage may look easy, but there is often a thin line between success and complications. It looks easy and is very quick to do, but even in the best of hands complications can and do occur, including uterine perforation.
It is not that difficult to perforate a pregnant uterus. Surgical abortion is more of an art at times than a science, and to know how to successfully evacuate a uterus completely and without perforation takes a fair amount of practice. That's why when some people insinuate that residents don't have to learn how to provide a gentle and safe abortion since"they do enough D+E's in the Emergency Room on women who miscarry" have no bloody clue what abortion involves. It is a very safe procedure to be sure. But ob/gyn residents and attending physicians can still have complications, and in some cases these complications are very serious.
Perhaps that is what will get people off their collective butts and realize why abortion is necessary from a public health perspective. To be sure, it is not something that any of us in the pro-choice community thinks should be done in a cavalier fashion. It's a difficult decision for any woman, and it's not easy for many of my colleagues, either. But while in a perfect world, every child would be wanted, no contraceptive would ever fail, sexual assault and incest would never happen, that just isn't reality. We do need to have fewer abortions, and that is why complete sexual education and better access to birth control is so critical. But you don't make abortion less common by restricting it; you make it less common by making it less necessary in the first place.

Right, genius -- next time I'm 14 years old and my uncle decides I'm ripe for the picking, I'll remember your sage advice. Also, lovely that those who feel so strongly about the subject don't feel strongly enough to attach their names.
Molly, I hope against hope that this information is never required for actual use, but I applaud and thank you for putting it out there in the sad and horrifying event it becomes necessary.

Paul, I bet your step-son loves that you tell everyone he was the result of rape.
Dad of the year!
So exactly what is your point??
He doesn't know right now, but he will be informed one day. Knowing the truth isn't a bad thing, you know. At least my wife took responsibility and gave birth to him.
How many Pauls are there in the world?? If that is even my real name, so have I actually harmed my child? At least he is alive unlike many millions condemmed to death. So yes, I am Dad of the year, thank you.
I would like to also address the several comments about men being 50% of the "problem." You are right, but everybody must agree 100% before sex begins otherwise it's rape and illegal, and women pregnant from rape should be given the option of abortion. It's a child, not a choice. Prove to me when a fetus becomes a human being, and maybe I'll change my mind.. Otherwise, a human fetus is a human baby, it's not a lizard, rabbit, or monkey, it's a freakin' human being, now stop killing them because people are too ignorant to use birth control!!!!!!!!! If there is a God, which I believe, we all will have to answer for this outrage.
Now move along, nothing to see here...

Molly, would you mind if I sent a copy of this to our representatives in government and maybe even the supreme court judges?
I think it would be wise to remind them of the consequences of their decisions.
Please let me know at Hidentity@gmail.com
What about the ignorant asshats not using condoms? Oh, libtards believe that it must be Bush's fault for them getting pregnant. If you know that aportion is illegal, maybe idiots would stop haveing unprotected sex. Don't turf responsibilities of reproductive behavior onto the courts, people take responsibility. Maybe women should be shown photos of aborted fetuses with their formed hands, feet, toes, faces, etc. just before the procedure and be told it's not a baby, it's just byproducts of conception. How many pseudo-parents have actually seen the remains? I think that the remains should be shown to the pseudo-parents to remind them of what they have done. Ooo can't do that here, someone might actually be offended, or feel guilty. We want the would be murderers to feel good about their "decision." Would you like fries with that McAbortion?
I find it ironic about reinforcing that infant killing is a choice that women have with their bodies, but NOTHING is said about the drunken one-night stand that caused the conception, or whatever irresponsible behavior caused the "problem." Yes women have a choice with their bodies, maybe they should be more selective about what and how it is put into them.

I had my 7 week ultrasound last week, got to see my baby's heart beating. It was tremendous.
This is a wanted pregnancy, a wanted child. I am so thrilled that I get to CHOOSE to bring this child into the world, that my first pregnancy is one I desperately wanted, and that if my circumstances changed, or if the fetus had a defect, or if I got sick, I would be able to terminate this pregnancy. I live in a state (Washington) with Constitutional protection for abortion, and I thank my lucky stars every day of this pregnancy for it.
Bravo, Molly. More people need to see how to do this; if the state takes away a doctor's right to perform an abortion, that right must devolve to the people.

I personally am sterile, but I certainly have female friends and relatives who aren't. A college age family friend recently had to go out of state to have an abortion despite the fact shre had heart problems that would have killed her had she continued the pregnancy. She would have died early enough in the pregnancy that the fetus couldn't have had any chance of survival either. Where is the point in that? That's right, there isn't one.
Abortion is legal in her state (Michigan) but as they could not find a practitioner she had to take the next step.
I am a fourth generation pro-choicer. Even my fifties housewife grandmother who had four children was and remains pro-choice having seen many of the young women she knew 'disappear' in the days before Roe v. Wade. I find it hard to express what a comfort it is to know that I am here because my mother absolutely wanted me and absolutely loved the idea of me before I was even concieved (and, that she also felt that way about my brother). That makes me feel a heck of a lot more secure than if she'd had me as a punishment, because she 'had to'.

I don't know that a woman taking this into her own hands is very smart. Not that she would be doing it herself, but how would you like to be the "first" patient of someone. My opinion on abortion has no place in this blog, but I worry that a woman could lose her life by allowing an "inexperienced" person to do this while reading instructions. Sort of like putting together an entertainment center with the instructions right there. Very dangerous.

I am an agnostic, a liberal and I am totally supportive of you assembling and distributing this information and I have always been pro-choice and will always remain so.
However, all life is sacred, it is a miracle beyond belief that we are alive and thriving on this planet. I think that belief in God is as ignorant as disbelief in God and the same applies for the beginning of life. To try and conditionally say life begins at "X" moment is ridiculous. We don’t know, and may never know.
I am a single father. I was quite young when my GF got pregnant (she was using BC! it's not 100%). I was also an unemployed hipster-musician. We immediately went ahead and scheduled an abortion. As I thought about my situation I began to realize how amazing it was, how her body was "building" a new human. I thought about it the same way I marvel at all things in nature, as an amazing tribute to evolution and to life on Earth.
Being a critical thinker I asked myself a few questions: Do people who get cancer have a choice? How about those paralyzed by illness? Should they just blow their brains out because their life has been irrevocably altered? Should I terminate a living being because I hate the smell of apple juice and baby poo, cant stand Disney movies or toys all over my well decorated house or cleaning up puke and wiping snotty noses and driving some other morons kids around while they ruin my leather interior. Should I do it because I won’t be able to go out every weekend and get wasted or hook-up with college girls or take a road-trip on a whim? I could not answer any of these questions with a yes.
My GF and I came to the same conclusion independently, to have and raise our child. Was it in OUR best interest? No. But it was a responsibility and life changing event that we could not avoid. My friends all ask me is it worth it to give up my old life for? Yes. Why? Not only because my child is the most wonderful thing in my world, but because life changing events happen to everyone. It could have been a terrible car accident that changed my life. Thankfully it was not. But never the less I had a responsibility to myself, my child and to all my ancestors (all the way back to single-cell organisms), who suffered and toiled and ultimately persevered at continuing the miracle of life.

I pray nobody takes that "recipe" seriously. Any back-alley abortion not done by a trained professional, with proper equipment and the experience to deal with urgent or emergent outcomes, can lead to an all-to-grim conclusion for the woman.
I shudder at the thought of some teenagers using this blog entry to try and "do it themselves." Please, if necessary go to a more enlightened state with less restrictive notification laws, and make an appointment with a licensed medical provider via an organization such as Planned Parenthood. The road trip can save you from infection, bleedouts, prolapses, permanent sterility, or other consequences that could cost you your life -- or at the very least, require an expensive hospitalization, where the truth would come out anyway.

Paul, why are you so convinced that women who have abortions are irresponsible sluts? The two women I know who have had them were married, already mothers, and could not financially or physically afford another child. They were "selective," as you say, by only having sex with their husbands. These women chose to preserve the quality of life their children will experience by not putting thier families through the financial drain and thier bodies through the physical hardship of a preganancy that would keep them from taking care of those families. Neither of them had health insurance at the time. Both are considered "lower middle-class."
And if the pro-life folks are so committed to the lives of children, why don't we see anti-choicers adopting unwanted black and brown and crack-addicted children to the limit of thier means? Why aren't you advocating for national prenatal care for all? Why don't you advocate for a living wage and subsidized day care so that single mothers can raise the children they are expected to carry to term? Actions speak louder than words, and the actions I see by this group speak of keeping women from having control of their own lives and bodies, and forcing them into an outdated view of wife/mother that has no relevance today.
At 2:43 PM, Molly said…
Kaludge: Then you decided having a child WAS in fact in your best interests. You wanted the child more than you wanted the lifestyle. Otherwise your decision makes no sense. If it was "worth it," then it was in your best interests.
Aren't you glad to know that the child you had was born of your choice, and that you don't resent it for having been forced upon you by your government? Don't you think you might feel a little differently about your child if you had been forced into becoming a parent, rather than having the opportunity to decide that yes, this was what you wanted?

i'm not really sure what i think about it.
it seems like the same things i read as a teenager online on how to scam payphones and how to hack the free world, and to do the same thing to the human body makes it seem only so much more mechanical, how can one go that for?
on the other hand, as far as freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of choice goes...a woman's body is a woman's body. if she can choose her sexual partners, if she can choose under what circumstances she mates under, shouldn't she be able to decide under what circumstances her child is born under? if things are not TOTALLY ideal for that child, then the world doesn't need it. we have a situation now where the world is becoming ever more competitive and overpopulated. if a mother chooses to terminate her pregnancy then that is her choice and her choice only. She can comprehend if her child has the probability of succeeding the world more than any social worker or clinic worker. If the woman is already working 60 hours a week to support herself, I highly doubt that the children she produce will somehow change the course of all humanity. And if for example, 1 in 10,000 children were to be able to change the world, I’m not willing to risk the other 9,999 children to provide that chance for that one child. I teach children everyday, I see the looks on their faces and I only want the best for them, but to even consider that their lives will only become more crowded and and cumbersome, for what reason?
To do it yourself, fair be it, very crazy, but feasible, after all we are just machines, and this is apparently a problem in our “program” why not fix it if we have the ability? I believe in free life, but at what cost? I’d rather abort a thousand sells at early birth then have to explain to a girl why she has to prostitute herself out every night in order to pay for her families food. And if you don’t understand then, then I highly recommend that you leave the situation surrounding your current life and travel to some place where things are not so green. Currently, I am an American citizen living in Mainland China, and the shit that I see here would destroy the soul of mother Teresa. Higher quality, not quantity is really the only solution.

Here's a statistic for you- 100% of the people commenting on this blog were once a "fetus" or a "parasite" (as one person stated it). The total disregard for human life on this blog is staggering.
Just like a rape victim isn't consulted before a rape- babies aren't consulted before they are concieved. Any rape victim who brings their baby to term should be considered a saint for saving the life of another human being- then they can put the baby up for adoption, as there are many, many couples who would give their life to be able to have a baby, but aren't able to.
Here's some more stats to consider:
Convienence/ Murder
25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing.
21.3% of women cannot afford a baby.
14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child.
12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy.)
10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career.
7.9% of women want no (more) children.
Total 91.8%
Health Issues
3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health.
2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health.
Total 6.1%
These stats don't even mention rape victims- probably because they virtually don't exist.
http://womensissues.about.com/cs/abortionstats/a/aaabortionstats.htm
What religion or wise man that ever lived- ever claim that life is fair? No one- because it isn't- and it's foolish to think that destroying a "fetus" is the answer to all your problems.
To everyone commenting on this blog- be thankful that you were given the chance to breath the words you are saying- because had you been concieved in this era- you might not have been able to- if your parents didn't think it would be convienent to have you.
As a "full term fetus"...living and breathing- the only reaction you could possible have to this post is disgust.

Wow. Some of you are soooo clueless. I am a college student, and was forwarded this link by our Pro-Choice group. And thank goodness I was. Not because I am going to use this procedure on myself or friends, but beacause it gave me a chance to read all these comments.
To my main point- Sex feels good. I'm going to have sex whenever and wherever I want. Human beings have evolved to this luxury, and I'm going to take advantage of it. I do everything I can to make sure I don't get pregnant, but if I do, you can bet your Bibles that I would get an abortion. And don't you dare tell me that if I got pregnant it was my own fault. Mistakes happen sometimes. Yeah, I said it- mistakes. That's what a child would be to me at this point in my life. Carrying a child for 9 months and then putting it up for adoption would be academic suicide. Maybe I'm selfish. But that's not how I see it. I refuse to bring a child into this world who wouldn't be wanted or cared for to the best of my abilities.
And to you conservative asshole fathers out there- how would you like it if Molly's procedure was the only option available to your daughter? Thanks for posting the blog, but hopefully no-one without medical training will ever perform it.

Even if an ultrasound shows the baby has severe hydrocephalus, in SD the mother will have to carry it to term.
The child will have no brain, no emotions or feelings, and will certainly die- but any doctor who aborts this fetus will get five years in jail.
The bill also makes no provisions for victims of rape or incest, probably outlaws the "morning after" pill, and may even outlaw "the pill," since birth control pills don't prevent conception (they prevent the zygote from attaching to the uterus).
This law sucks.

At-home medical abortion is a lot safer and easier, too
I, myself, plan to get to work setting up a nonprofit, possibly based in Amsterdam, to connect fully qualified medical doctors and experienced nurses by telephone to women seeking at-home (but not do-it-yourself) medical abortions using RU-486.
I need to finish up some business deals to amass the couple of million dollars I expect this to require. This is expected to take about another year.
The necessary drugs -- two small pills -- can be ordered over the internet from a variety of international pharmacies. Google for it. Not only that, RU-486 is legal in the US. The woman will be issued a prescription by a qualified medical doctor and supervised -- via international phone call -- by an experienced doctor.
Technically, ordering drugs with a valid prescription into the US from an international pharmacy is illegal, but the illegality is committed only by the woman herself, not the prescribing doctor, provided the doctor is located in a jurisdiction which allows at-home medical abortion. The doctor would be shielded from learning the location of the woman by the lack of caller ID and dialing technologies, if necessary.
For the two or three percent of these abortions which fail, my organization would fly the woman to a state, such as California, where a surgical abortion could be done in an ordinary clinic.
Any profits (after legal bills, ha ha ha!!) will be used to set up a woman's clinic in either Nicaragua or Sri Lanka.
Get prepared to be sued, of course, but international courts are unlikely to listen to the SD State Legislature.
Check out www.wow.org. These women are also working in this area. The doctor is a woman called Rebecca Gomperts. They have a boat which docks in countries where abortion is illegal, such as Portugal, Ireland and Poland, takes women 12 miles out into international waters, gives them a dose of RU-486, which they take there, and provides them with the second pill, which they take with telephone contact two days later at home, where the actual bleeding takes place.
It's like a heavy period.
They have garnered a lot of publicity around the very strong demand for safe, doctor-supervised abortion in countries where women are forced to use illegal means.
Most illegal abortions in Latin America are now being done using an ulcer medication called Cytotec inserted vaginally. This is also safer than attempting non-sterile surgical abortions, though it would surely not be as safe as having acces by mail to a real RU-486 regimen and the supervision of trained personel.

Hi Molly -
Have you thought of making this available as a Print on Demand book? I'm putting together the senior memory book for my college, and we're using a print on demand printer called Lulu (http://www.lulu.com). They allow people to put whatever content they want in books, and people can order them over the Internet. They're a really cool company, and they respect the privacy of authors (ie, they don't believe in censorship). Let's say your finished book is 100 pages long... you could print it as a paper back for $6.53 or as a hard back book for $16.01. I would feel privileged to help you format your book when you finish it. I'm all into Open Source feminism. :-) The best part about Lulu is there is no minimum number of books to order. Hopefully no one will ever need to use this information, but if they do, they can order your book!
If you need help with PDFing, formatting, anything publishing related, feel free to IM me at Phoenix Frances.
